Smartwatches are designed to do three things well. This means you don’t have to reach out to your phone often, track your health indicators, or make your wrists look beautiful. However, not all smartwatches are created the same. Some are good alternatives to the phone, while others look like a regular watch. This is a summary of the biggest differences between traditional smartwatches (such as the Apple Watch) and hybrid smartwatches such as the WithingsScanWatchHorizon that we’ve seen earlier.
Traditional smartwatches do a little bit of everything. They are relatively stylish, rich in activity and health tracking capabilities, and packed with phone-like features such as NFC for mobile payments and speakers and microphones for making calls. Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, Fitbit Sense, and future Pixel Watch fall into this category.
However, hybrid watches, as the name implies, usually combine the qualities of an analog watch and a smartwatch. They tend to look like regular watches and have a traditional face that physically holds hours and minutes instead of digital numbers. Hybrid watches don’t have many “smart ” features, but they usually last a long time on a single charge. It offers many options for tracking your health.
I like traditional smartwatches and usually wear an Apple Watch. But after spending a few weeks on the $ 500 Withings ScanWatch Horizon, I remember why hybrid smartwatches are attractive and not as good as general-purpose smartwatches.

Connect to my phone
When I switched from the Apple Watch to the ScanWatch Horizon, I felt more dependent on my phone. Withings ‘ Hybrid Watch can display notifications (calls, SMS, app alerts, etc.). You can also use the clock to set timers and alarms.
But even these basic tasks are easy to do with a traditional watch. The ScanWatch Horizon isn’t ideal for reading full notifications because it only has a small circular screen that occupies the clock face. As I wrote in the review, ScanWatch Horizon has no touchscreen and voice controls, so time from wrist And setting an alarm is inconvenient.
It’s much easier to read notifications and reply to text on your Apple Watch. Series 7 (pictured) is a large screen with a QWERTY keyboard.
If you need a smartwatch that can offload your phone for everyday tasks, ScanWatch may not. Think of ScanWatch Horizon as a watch first, then a smartwatch. I haven’t connected my Apple Watch to my data plan yet, but it’s still a good alternative to the phone. You don’t have to take your phone out of your pocket for tasks such as replying to text messages, browsing headlines while waiting for the elevator, or checking out at your local Rite Aid cashier. ..
This is not the case for ScanWatch Horizon. Whenever I feel the notification buzz, I pick up the phone right away. ScanWatch Jewelry feels like a fashion accessory with built-in health tracking. I like how my wrists look, but I didn’t realize I was using the screen for anything other than checking time or starting training. Most of my engagement takes place within the Withings HealthMate app. This app provides physical indicators and activity details.

The ScanWatch Horizon is more limited than the Apple Watch when it comes to mimicking the functionality of your phone, but it also has other advantages. With a stainless steel case, a rotating laser engraved bezel and an analog watch face, the ScanWatch Horizon is one of the most elegant smartwatches ever. Needless to say, it’s cheaper than the stainless steel version of the Apple Watch Series 7, which starts at $ 700.
Amazing battery life
The Apple Watch may be smarter, but the ScanWatch’s horizontal battery life can’t be approached. According to Withings, the ScanWatch Horizon lasts 30 days on a single charge and lasts longer than a standard smartwatch. In my experience, the ScanWatch Horizontal battery has drained up to 35% in just one week. I haven’t spent enough time to see if the Withings claim lasts for 30 days, but it’s still impressive.
I usually charge my Apple Watch every night, but according to Withings, the ScanWatch Horizon can last up to 30 days on a single charge.
Apple Watch Series 7, on the other hand, typically lasts 1-2 days on a single charge. But that’s also because Apple Watch has more technology built into it. Compared to the small ScanWatch Horizontal screen, the OLED color touch screen alone has a significant impact on battery life. In addition, other wearables such as Garmin Venu 2 Plus that use OLED screens can be used for up to 9 days. You can get more battery life from today’s smartwatches without sacrificing a bright color display.
The two watches are deeply involved in health, but their strengths are different.
Withings ‘HealthMate app main screen. Thanks to Withings for providing more sleep data than the Apple Watch.
If neither watch has one area that is not at risk, the watch keeps track of that condition. Both the ScanWatch Horizon and the Apple Watch Series 7 can measure all the characteristic health metrics found in high-end smartwatches. This includes ECG (ECG or EKG) measurements (both watches are FDA approved for this feature), and general heart rate, activity and exercise data, sleep and blood oxygen saturation. It will be. Withings ‘ Blood oxygen function is Apple Unlike , it is FDA approved.
While there are many similarities when it comes to tracking health, smartwatches have their advantages. For example, Withings can provide more sleep data. You can see the breakdown of deep sleep or time spent in deep sleep, average heart rate during sleep, and breathing problems. We also publish sleep scores that assess sleep quality, as well as Fitbit, Oura, and Amazon products.
Your Apple Watch only shows your sleep time, time spent in bed, and sleep breathing rate. That information is useful, but having access to sleep quality data can help you understand why you are tired and healthy in the morning. Also, if your sleep score isn’t very high these days, start hitting the bag faster than usual.

The design of Apple Watch is better than WithingsScanWatchHorizon in several other areas. Small and light, the Apple Watch is more comfortable to wear during training and sleep (although I usually charge the Apple Watch overnight). In addition, the Apple Watch has a built-in GPS for tracking outdoor driving, but the ScanWatch Horizon must rely on the GPS of your phone. Apple Watch can also customize the display to show the activity ring. It also helps keep you active all day long.
Withings ScanWatch Horizon (pictured) is an elegant watch and fitness tracker on one device. But I prefer traditional smartwatches like the Apple Watch. It does a better job than pulling me away from my phone.
Withings ScanWatch Horizon inherits some of the greatest benefits of analog watches. Elegant design and battery that doesn’t need to be recharged every night. It’s also a prestigious fitness tracker that doesn’t require a subscription to gain deeper insights like Fitbit and Oura devices.
That said, I’m not sure if it deviates from a traditional smartwatch like the Apple Watch. Instead of looking good, we appreciate the convenience of being able to verbally ask the watch to start a workout or respond to text from the wrist. The excellent design of the ScanWatch Horizon could be even more appreciated in 2013 when the smartwatch still looked like this. there is. Smartwatches are smaller, lighter, and more common, so you won’t feel any discomfort on your wrist during weddings or dinners.
The ScanWatch Horizon is perfect for anyone who wants to have a classic watch and fitness tracker on one device. I understand why some people like the simplicity of ScanWatchHuman . This means that it does not get in the way of the watch itself. But the Apple Watch does a better job of freeing you from your phone, and it’s more important to me.
